Project Information
School: Dvorak Technology Academy
Teacher: Mr. Jim Davis
Grade: 3rd through 8th
Subject Area: Math
Illinois Learning Standards: Grade-appropriate math standards.
(6 - 10)
Purpose: This project aims to provide students with a choice of online math activities tailored to individual learning content needs, based on Chicago Public Schools Math Benchmark Assessment data. Key elements include (1) only activities that addressed student needs are shown to the students and (2) students can choose among many activities.
Procedure: I used FirstClass data to develop a table of student names; and Curriculum and Instructional Management (CIM) data to build a database of learning needs. I pulled math resources from online sources (in particular Internet4Classrooms), and translated the standards identified by the source into their corresponding Illinois Learning Standards. Data was put into a database and a front-end designed to provide students with a simple way of locating the resources. During regular laptop time, students were directed to log-in to the resource search site and locate a resource that interested them. In theory, only resources that addressed a particular student's needs were displayed on the screen. To support the students, teachers circulated the room to provide content assistance.
